The Cut: Anatomy of a Motorcycle Patch Set

The "cut" — a sleeveless leather or denim vest — is a rider's patch canvas. The back carries the signature 3-patch set (top rocker, center patch, bottom rocker), while the front and sides hold officer rank, support patches, and additional designations. Every patch we produce is finished for direct attachment to a cut with merrowed borders, iron-on , sew-on, or velcro backing — ready for leather, denim, and riding jackets alike.

The back shows Iron Legion with a knight emblem and Arizona rocker, while the front features President and Support Your Local MC patches to demonstrate full motorcycle club patch layout and sizing.

Center Patch

Center back

The club's main emblem. The largest piece and visual anchor of the 3-patch set.

Bottom Rocker

Lower back

Territory, chapter location, or motto — completing the 3-patch layout.

MC Patch

Beside center

The "MC cube" designating official Motorcycle Club status.

Side Rockers

Sides of back

Additional chapter designations or secondary info flanking the center.

Officer Patch

Front chest

Rank identification — President, VP, Road Captain, Sergeant-at-Arms.

Prospect Patch

Back

Worn during probation — replaced with the full 3-patch set when membership is earned.

Support Patch

Front or back

Worn by club allies — visually distinct from member colors.

Nomad Rocker

Lower back

Replaces the territory rocker for chapter-independent riders.

Not every club uses the 3-patch format. A one-piece patch — a single large back patch combining all elements into one design — is common for riding clubs and independent groups. We produce both.

How to Size Rocker Patches for Your Vest

The most common mistake we see with rocker orders is width — a rocker that looks great in a digital proof can curl or crowd the seams once it's on the vest. The fix is simple: measure your back panel from the left seam to the right seam where the rocker will sit, then leave at least half an inch of clearance on each side. That gives you your maximum width.

The image demonstrates how to measure a vest properly to size a motorcycle club back patch while allowing half inch clearance from the seams.

Proportioning a Full Three-Piece Set

Your top and bottom rockers should be roughly the same width as the center patch — or up to half an inch wider. Keeping all three pieces proportional is what makes a set look intentional rather than assembled from mismatched parts.

Leave about a quarter inch to half an inch of breathing room between each piece vertically. Crowding the pieces together makes the set feel compressed, while too much space breaks the visual connection between them.

Measurement guides show same width or plus 0.5 inch max across the top and bottom and 1 to 2 inch spacing between the rocker and center patch to demonstrate proper motorcycle club patch placement.

Lettering & Border Considerations

On a curved rocker, letter height matters more than on a flat patch — embroidered text under half an inch tall can lose definition, especially with thin typefaces. We typically recommend capital letters between 0.5" and 0.9" tall, with bold or condensed block fonts that hold up at riding distance. If your club name is long, widening the rocker slightly beats shrinking the text.

For borders, 0.25" to 0.4" gives a solid, clean edge without cutting into your lettering space. And for any rocker going on a leather cut, sew-on backing is the right call — heat adhesive can work loose with the natural flex of a riding vest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order for custom motorcycle patches?

Our minimum order is just 10 patches per design. Volume pricing applies — the more you order, the lower the per-patch cost. Visit our pricing page for quantity-based pricing.

Can you match the colors on our existing club patches?

Yes. Send us a photo or physical sample of your existing patches and we will match your thread colors, border style, and backing type. We use a standardized thread color chart with over 200 colors, so we can produce exact matches for consistent club branding across old and new patches.

How do I submit my club's artwork or logo for a patch?

Upload your artwork through our online patch builder , email it directly, or request a free quote with your design idea. We accept vector files (AI, EPS, SVG), high-resolution images (PNG, JPG), or even a rough sketch — our design team will create a production-ready proof for your approval at no charge.

Do you offer rush production for rally or event deadlines?

Yes. Standard production is 14–17 days after design approval, but we offer rush production for time-sensitive orders. Contact us with your event date and we will confirm what is possible.

What backing works best for a leather cut?

For leather vests and cuts, sew-on backing is the standard — it creates the most secure, permanent bond and is how most MC patches are traditionally attached. We also offer iron-on and velcro backing for riders who want to swap patches between vests or remove them for washing.

What materials are used in your motorcycle patches?

Our patches are embroidered with colorfast polyester thread on heavy twill backing, with merrowed (overlocked) borders to prevent fraying. This combination is UV-resistant, water-resistant, and built to hold shape and color through years of highway riding.
