Building a Chest Crest

  • Size it from the jersey, not the artwork

    Measure the space on the chest of the jersey you actually use, then price the patch by its average size: height plus width, divided by two, rounded up to the half inch. Our online tables list embroidered patches up to 7 inches; a crest larger than that is quoted individually, so put the finished dimensions on the quote form. The patch size calculator does the arithmetic.

  • Coverage decides the look and the price

    A large crest is where embroidery coverage matters most. Full coverage stitches over the entire twill background for the solid, heavyweight look of a traditional hockey crest; minimal and moderate coverage leave twill showing and cost less per patch. Ask for both on the proof if you are undecided; the pricing page has a table for each.

  • Mascot outlines and hot-cut borders

    Hockey crests are often a mascot silhouette rather than a shield. A hot-cut border follows the outline of the design for a small per-patch charge; a merrowed border is included free on circles, shields, and other standard shapes. See selecting a border .

  • Anniversary and championship patches

    A 25th or 50th season patch, a league championship, or a memorial patch usually goes on the shoulder or upper chest next to the crest. Metallic gold or silver thread is available for these at a per-patch surcharge, and a matching year patch can be reordered each season without changing the crest.

Sew It On: Backing for Jerseys

Game jerseys are heavy, oversized, and washed all season, and the crest is the largest patch on them. A sew-on backing is the standard here: it is permanent for the life of the jersey and adds nothing to the price. An iron-on backing is fine for practice jerseys, hoodies, and warm-ups where speed matters more than permanence, but it is rated for roughly 20 to 30 washes and we recommend stitching around the edge afterward ( how to iron on a patch ). Rink Bags and Wet Gear

Hockey bags get thrown on wet rink floors and into car trunks all winter. For a team logo on the bag itself, a PVC patch is the better fit than thread: it is a molded rubber patch that is weather-resistant and built for outdoor and tactical gear, and it can be ordered with a Velcro backing so the same patch moves from the old bag to the new one. PVC orders start at 50 pieces, so they suit a club or association order rather than a single line.

Questions Hockey Teams Ask Before Ordering

Our crest is 9 inches across. Can you make it?

Yes. We manufacture patches up to 15 inches in width or height. Sizes above 7 inches are not in the online tables, so send the finished dimensions and quantity on the quote form and we will price it with your proof.

How many thread colors can a crest have?

Up to seven are included. Additional colors, neon, and metallic gold or silver are added per patch; the amounts are listed on the patch options page. Most hockey crests fit within seven.

Can we order the chest crest and a smaller shoulder version together?

Yes. Each size is priced from its own row of the table, so the two are separate line items on one quote and one proof. The minimum is ten patches per line for embroidered patches and fifty for PVC.

Should the bag patch match the jersey crest?

It can use the same artwork, but it will be a different product: a PVC patch is molded rubber rather than thread, so colors are matched to the vinyl rather than to thread charts. The free proof shows both so you can compare before ordering.

How long does a hockey order take?
