At Patches4Less.com, we have produced patches of all sorts, in various shapes and sizes, and for several purposes. One of the most common questions we are asked is, "what is the perfect size for a perfect patch." Honestly, there is no ideal size for a custom patch. The size of the patch depends on the customer's preference, though there are some standard sizes to build from.

Firefighter patches, police officer patches, and scout patches are typically the same size and relatively similar in shape. But keep in mind, these sizes are merely suggestions. You don't have to follow any size requirements; you can opt to choose a size that fits your particular designs. Let's talk about the most common-sized patches and their uses. Typically patches range somewhere between 3-5" inches.

The most frequent size used for Boy Scout and Girl Scout patches is 3." This provides enough space for unique details and text while also allowing the scouts to add to their collection of patches. For firefighter patches and police patches, these designs are typically 4" - 5" inches in height, though the shapes may vary from patch to patch.

Military patches and those worn by security officers range from 4" - 5" inches as well, though they are typically taller than they are wide. For biker and motorcycle patches, bigger is better. The most frequent size used is 12″ for a back patch with top and bottom rocker. Logo patches and sports patches generally range from 3" - 4" inches, though they arrive in many shapes. Keep in mind that these are just recommendations due to patterns that we have seen.

The best part about custom patches is that you can choose what size and shape work best for your design. Whatever size you choose, ensure that it compliments your design and the garment to which it is attached. If you have an intricate design with detailed elements, it's best to choose a larger patch. The bigger the patch, the better the details. Opting for a patch that is too small will result in a design that is hard to read.

To determine the patch size you would like to use, just add the emblem's length and the symbol's width and divide that by 2. The number you get from dividing the two is the custom embroidered patch size. For example, if you have an emblem that is 4" wide by 10" tall, you would add four and ten, which equals fourteen; and then divide that by two. Fourteen divided by two equals seven; therefore, your patch size would be seven.

All around, the most common patch size is 3", but again, patch size is a personal choice that depends on the design and the concept. The location of the patch will also help determine how big your patch should be. While there is really no "ideal" size for a patch, it just means that you have to figure out precisely what you want. It's about personal preference and where you plan to place your custom patch. For smaller patches, aim for a range from 3″ to 5″ in height. For back patches and other large designs, the most frequent size is 12."
