The Power of Two: Patches And Stickers Promote Your Band

Combine patches and stickers to promote your band to a wider audience.

If you’ve ever worked a merch table at a concert, you know the t-shirts are the stars. Fans pore over them, check the sizes, debate which style they want, hold them up, maybe even try them on over what they’re wearing. That’s understandable. The shirts are big, flashy, hard to miss.

Nearby, usually over on one corner of the table, sit a couple of other items that seem like afterthoughts: bumper stickers and patches. What many bands don’t realize is that those two small items, when used properly, can be powerful tools to attract fans both new and old, and boost name recognition.

The Power of Two

Both patches and stickers are excellent marketing methods in their own right. By coordinating the use of both to complement each other, you can multiply their branding strength.

Visibility Matters Today

In the music industry of the 21st century, just having a great sound isn’t enough. Streaming alone doesn’t pay artists enough to support a lasting career. Live shows are the secret to success. Growing your audience demands a visible presence outside the concert hall too. That’s where patches and stickers can make a meaningful difference.

Two Products, One Plan

Patches and stickers may be simple products, but used properly in combination, they can form a strong branding synergy. The key is to appreciate the role of each product.

Stickers are an essentially passive medium that remains in place long-term. Your fans will place them on cars, laptops, guitar cases and other items, where they become part of the product. They’re essentially a miniature billboard, showing your band logo or name to all who pass by it.

Patches are a different breed. They show a fan’s more active commitment to you. By attaching a patch to a jacket, backpack or bag, they're making a deliberate statement that they’re members of your band’s fan base. That’s a distinctly deeper relationship than a follow or like on social media.

The two products address fans at different stages of their attraction to your band. While the stickers appeal to the newcomer or casual fan, patches are for those who find your band makes a real difference in their lives. The progression from newbie to true believer is why it makes sense to consider the two products together.

Give Stickers Away. Make Patches Feel Earned.

What most bands don’t realize is the distinction in the feel of the products. Stickers should flow like water. Patches should feel like a reward.

Stickers are cheap to produce. You can afford to be generous with them. Include them with souvenir booklets, toss them in with online orders, hand them out freely at the merch table. You can leave stacks of them in local record stores, coffee shops, guitar shops. The more stickers you send out, the more visible your band becomes, at very, very little cost to you.

On the other hand, patches are more expensive and take more effort to produce and display. Their premium appearance and materials gives them a greater perceived value. Remember, those buying patches at your concerts are showing a commitment they’re willing to pay for.

Price your patches accordingly. A range between $8 and $15 is a good starting point. Add exclusivity to increase the perceived value even more – create specific designs for each album, or for each tour.

Add Value with Limited Editions

You also can create limited-edition patches by restricting the total number produced, or by offering them only for a limited period. Number the patches, so fans can tell how rare each one is. A patch that feels meaningful is one that people will wear and show off proudly.

Something for Everyone

Not everyone who discovers your brand will want to spend significant cash at their first concert. That’s OK, as long as you have something to offer them at every level.

Go for a tiered approach. Start with stickers that are free, or just cost a buck or two. You’re giving the potential fans maximum accessibility, and zero commitment.

Next, go one step further. A small sticker pack, maybe $5 or so. One more step up the ladder offers a single patch, great for the relatively new fan who’s ready to show their appreciation.

A patch-and-sticker bundle rewards the more committed fans. Finally, show your appreciation for the superfans by offering them a limited-edition patch or patch set.

This kind of structure, gives even new fans a chance to be a part of your scene, even on a low budget. As fans attend more shows and move up over time, each step will deepen their connection to the band.

For your most dedicated fans, you can pair patches with t-shirt and sweatshirt purchases to create a high-end bundle. Make it a limited edition and you’ve got something the truly faithful will treasure.

Consistency is Critical

To be effective, your band image must be consistent. Don’t have a sticker with one look and a patch that looks like it could be from a completely different group. Develop a strong core visual element and stick to it.

Think about some of the most instantly recognizable band logos of all time: the Rolling Stones’ “Hot Lips”; The Grateful Dead’s “Steal Your Face” skull-and-lightning bolt, and Dancing Bears; and the Beatles’ “drop-T” name. The bands consistently stuck with a recognizable image (or two, in the case of the Dead).

Keep in mind that your logo needs to work within the constraints of patch and sticker sizes and colors. Too much detail won’t work. What you want is a scalable design that works on any size from a 2-inch patch to a full-size poster.

Reach Out on Social Media

Once you’ve established your band’s visual motif, social media can boost your profile even higher. Feature your sticker and patch designs on Instagram and TikTok, and encourage your fans to post their own photos of their favorite jacket patches and sticker placements. Engage with them and turn it into a conversation.

Merch Makes A Difference

There’s no substitute for talent, of course, but plenty of talented bands never get a chance to develop an audience. Marketing with custom merchandise is an effective way to get your name and logo into the public eye. The more exposure the image gets, the more exposure your sound can get.

Patches and stickers are low-cost, easily affordable both from a production standpoint and for your fans. Done right, they’re powerful brand-building tools that can make a real difference.
