Modular Patch Sets: One Brand, Multiple Images
Modular patch sets enable you to maintain a consistent, high profile brand image.
It’s no secret that custom patches are a time-honored way to show identity, beliefs or membership. Show me the patches you wear and I’ll tell you who you are. Whether it’s a band logo on a jacket, a unit insignia on a sleeve, or a merit badge on a sash, each patch reveals something about you that you want the world to know.
Not surprisingly, many different groups and organizations have picked up on that identity, and offer patches that reflect their viewpoint, position or logo. There’s recently been a shift, though. More and more, today’s patches aren’t just single decorations. Instead, they’re becoming part of a cohesive branding system.
The combination of two innovative concepts, modular patch sets and multi-backing options, are creating new opportunities to create a consistent brand message across multiple visual platforms.
What Makes A Modular Set?

The idea of modular patch sets is simple: a system of patches designed to work together. Unlike a single-patch approach, it’s a way to maintain a single viewpoint with ongoing updates.
The components of a modular patch set include a primary or hero patch, along with smaller secondary elements such as icons, taglines, decorative borders or seasonal add-ons.
Examples
A classic example of the concept is the Scouting merit badge tradition. Each badge is its own signifier, but when worn on a single sash, tells a cohesive story of accomplishment. Achieving more badges becomes a motivating factor, and flexible placement allows the story to continue. Both Boy Scouts (now Scouting USA) and Girl Scouts feature such a system.
Sports teams also use the same idea. Teams and leagues feature rotating championship patches, league insignia and sponsor mark across the same basic uniforms.
Small brands and independent designers have recently adopted modular patches as well. By adding regular “drops,” they create a system that encourages fans to collect and combine patches over time.
Adding Creativity and Consistency

Grouping patches into modular sets gives you an opportunity to creatively explore variations on your patch designs. Once you have the hero patch design set, you can create variants for specific use on different garments, hats or tote bags. Your visual language stays the same, and the variant patches add a new creative element. The consistent appearance between designs strengthens your brand identity.
Giving your customers the opportunity to mix and match patches while knowing their choices will continue the design theme encourages ongoing engagement with your brand, not just a single purchase. You can strengthen the theme even more with limited seasonal add-ons, numbered editions and commemorative pieces.
Large organizations can benefit as much as small ones. You can maintain a consistent company identity while enabling regional or departmental variations throughout the entire company.
Backing Choices

Modular sets give you extra design flexibility. Multi-backing options give you even more control over how you present your brand. It’s all about giving your customers what they need.
Your primary choice of backing types will depend on the purpose of your main hero patch. That choice will be the standard, but as you coordinate with the rest of your designs, you can vary the backing to suit each patch purpose.
Sew-on patches are the traditional, and most common attachment choice. It’s the most permanent option, and is by far the best choice for workwear, uniforms and other items subject to heavy wear and/or frequent washing.
Iron-on patches are great for items such as caps, denim jackets and backpacks. Attachment is fast and easy, and requires no special equipment other than an iron. These are ideal for DIY projects and retail customers. Keep in mind that this style won’t stand up to frequent washing, and isn’t suitable for all fabrics.
Velcro® hook-and-loop fastening is the most versatile backing of all. You can easily swap patches among different garments, or quickly apply and remove them from a particular garment or other gear. These are great for rotating patches for different purposes – seasonal marks, rank insignia and event badges.
Magnetic backing is an increasingly popular choice. This style offers great flexibility, without the need to create holes in fabric or risk heat damage. Like hook-and-loop fasteners, it allows quick removal and replacement of patches.
Peel-and-Stick adhesive is a temporary attachment method that’s perfect for short-term or one-time events.
Your patch provider can produce the same artwork with any of these backing styles. That gives you the flexibility serve different customer needs with the same consistent design.
Putting It All Together
To build a truly effective modular patch system, start with a strong hero patch. Create that powerful main image and build from there.
Consider the intended audience for your patches and how they’ll use them. Uniform patches and others that see heavy wear and frequent laundering need sew-on patches. Concertgoers are likely to prefer the convenience of iron-on. Outdoor enthusiasts are likely to want hook-and-loop.
Next, think about variants of your hero design that will appeal to that audience. Concert fans will appreciate special edition drops and annual tour update patches. Sports enthusiasts, campers, bicyclists and other outdoor folks go for event patches such as marathons, triathlons, and bucket-list type events such as hikes. Anything that gives you a recurring opportunity to provide an updated patch is a great choice.
Collectability is also a great asset. Limited edition and special event commemorative patches help keep your audience engaged and coming back for repeat purchases.
