A well-crafted patch is a great way to promote your brand, enhance professionalism among your staff, and recognize achievement. Choosing the right backing material and thread is the key to creating durable patches that will stand up to weather, washing and wear without fading, losing shape or fraying edges.

Felt

Felt backing is popular for decorative patches rather than workwear. The soft texture creates a sense of depth. However, it is not durable enough for rugged environments such as uniform patches or outdoor wear.

Canvas

Canvas features a tighter weave than twill, and is typically thicker. It’s rugged enough for outdoor gear, able to withstand frequent wear. Generally speaking, canvas is often less costly than twill, but that can depend on the intended use for the patch.

Embroidery Thread Types

Several thread types are available for embroidered patches. Each has its own distinct characteristics. Your choice can affect the appearance and durability of your patches.

Rayon Thread

At Patches4Less.com, we use rayon threads exclusively for your custom embroidered patches. Rayon offers the best look for your decorative artwork or logos, giving them a refined look. It performs well for nearly all embroidered patch needs.

Metallic Threads and Neon Threads

We offer metallic and neon threads as an option. These add a dramatic pop of color to your design, but keep in mind that a little bit goes a long way. These bold thread types are best used as accents rather than as an entire design.

Cotton Thread

Cotton thread can give patches a handcrafted appearance. We don’t offer it at Patches4Less.com however, because it is much less durable, and does not hold up well to frequent wear and laundering.

An Alternative: PVC Patches

If you have a highly detailed design, or need a more rugged, weatherproof patch that won’t fade or fray, consider PVC patches. These soft vinyl patches don’t use thread or a separate backing material. The patch itself can be sewn directly to the garment, and offers the option of bold, vibrant colors. If you prefer the classic look that most people associate with a custom patch, stick with embroidered.

Designing Your Custom Patches

With the right backing material and thread, it’s easy to design patches that look great and hold up well to rugged conditions.

Consider the Patch’s Purpose and Intended Wear Environment.

The best choice for your patch design will depend on two things: what you want to accomplish with the patches and where they will be worn most often. Simple name patches for employee uniforms don’t require heavy duty backing or reinforced thread. Felt patches are an excellent choice for indoor decorative patches, and chenille patches are perfect for athletic or academic achievements.

If you want to make a bolder impression to promote your logo or brand, consider adding metallic or neon thread. If you need tactical patches that will see extensive wear outdoors, consider using PVC patches instead of embroidered.

Don’t Forget the Border

For maximum visual impact, match the border to the style of your patch. For embroidered and woven patches in standard geometric shapes, Merrowed borders are idea. The raised, stitched border prevents fraying, and gives the patch a classic, timeless look.

With complex custom patch shapes, hot-cut borders are the way to go. These also prevent fraying, while giving the patch a flatter, more modern appearance. This is the only border style available for PVC patches.

Either border type offers outstanding durability.

Balance Your Stitch Count

It’s important when ordering embroidered patches to balance the stitch count with your design. Too few stitches can make your design looks sparse and your message illegible.
