Social Impact of Custom Patches

Social Impact of Custom Patches

Patches can be an effective way to promote social causes and movements.

You might think of custom patches as just utilitarian ways to identify employees or at most as simple fun fashion accessories. But patches can be so much more. Throughout their history, they have been seen as a way to send powerful messages of political or personal engagement.

Patches Unite

Custom patches have traditionally been popular fashion decorative elements. In recent decades, they have in many cases transcended that role to play a bigger part in social movements.

Patches are a highly effective means to unite individuals into a cohesive group. They create a sense of belonging, of being part of something bigger than oneself. They are a way to turn individual beliefs into a powerful social movement.

Making A Difference

A sense of belonging make an important distinction. It’s easy for an individual to feel they have no power to change things. By wearing a patch, they’re making a stand, staking out a position. When others see the patch and join in, when those people start wearing their own patches, they become a force to be taken seriously.

The Beginning

It starts with someone believing strongly in a cause. They might have considered it for some time, maybe thinking that expressing it would make them unpopular, or possibly even expose them to risk.

Making A Belief Visible

Nevertheless, the person decides the cause is important enough to them to go public with their belief. They create a patch, and start wearing it, maybe on a jacket, making a statement everywhere they go. When others see the patch, they ask the wearer about it. Those interested can join the cause, and start wearing their own patches, expanding the reach.

That’s not all. A well-designed patch can go viral on social media, broadening interest even more. The patch becomes a symbol of a movement, a way to broadcast the cause, while producing a sense of belonging as well. The more people feel a part of the group, the more likely they are to actively participate.

Patches are a popular way to identify and celebrate civic organizations, youth programs and civic volunteer events. These events and groups benefit from the participation of engaged members.

Building A Group Identity

Custom patches build and strengthen a sense of group coherence both directly and indirectly. One of the most important ways they do so is by providing a shared visual identity. The symbols, text and colors used transmit a message that doesn’t require translation to be understood.

Patches also offer a way to build connections to historical events. By using appropriate imagery, they can create a bridge between earlier fights for a cause and a modern struggle. Echoes of the past sharpen the focus on the present.

Defining The Cause

A custom patch gives a cause its brand identity. The size and clear graphics of a patch offer a visual symbol that news media, podcasters and social media sites can home in on. It’s a quick, efficient shorthand to represent the group’s message. Color, size and shape all play a role in telling the wider world what you represent and what change you want to see.

Spreading The Word

Custom patches are a highly cost-effective way to raise awareness. They’re economical enough to order in bulk and hand out at rallies, protests, meetings, cleanups and other events. The more you hand out, the more people will see your message. A well-designed patch can increase awareness of your group exponentially.

Durability is another strong point. The right patch style can carry your message for years to come, keeping your group identity and connections visible to both existing members and new prospects.

That’s important in another sense as well. In today’s digital world, it’s easy to communicate by text, instant messaging or social media. But the messages are ephemeral, disappearing without a trace with the swipe of a finger. Patches are a lasting physical reminder of an event, a group or a cause.

Designing Patches for Social Effectiveness

Creating custom patch designs to maximize their social impact isn’t complicated. You have plenty of choices, and by following a few simple rules, you can craft a design that will draw others to your cause or group.

Text, Image or Both?

You might think patches require art, but that’s not necessarily the case. Text alone can be powerful. A simple word or phrase can be highly effective in promoting your idea. Take for example the phrases “Make America Great Again” or “Black Lives Matter.” A custom patch with either phrase along instantly identifies your cause to people who share your beliefs (and to people who don’t as well.)

For some organizations, a basic image conveys an equally powerful message. For example, the pink ribbon is a  universally known symbol of support for breast cancer awareness.

The vast majority of patches will coordinate both text and images to create a cohesive message that people can relate to. With a little bit of planning, it’s easy to maximize the effectiveness of your design.

The size of your patch will determine the amount of text and imagery it can hold. Text needs to be large enough to be easily legible. In general, images should be simple and straightforward. That prevents the image from becoming muddy and incomprehensible

Which Patch Style to Choose

Patch size also can determine which patch style you need. Embroidered patches are the classic style, but the size of the thread used limits how small your text or image can be. If you want to use small text, a woven patch is a better choice. The woven style uses a thinner thread to give you more flexibility.

If you want to include gradient or highly detailed artwork, consider PVC or printed patches. Either will give you more color possibilities than embroidered or woven.
